THIS WEEK I'M THINKING ABOUT

The invoice for the life you actually want.

I killed an episode this week.

I had one written and half produced. It was called “The Gap,” and on paper it was fine. The Gap is that famous idea about the distance between the work you make and the taste that made you want to make it. Useful for a while. But I scrapped it, because for me the Gap has quietly turned into a performance trap. It only ever measures the space between where I am and where I think I should be, and that space never closes. It just moves. You hit the number, the number moves. You clear the bar, the bar moves. Chase the Gap long enough and you will spend a whole life sprinting toward a horizon and calling the exhaustion progress.

So I replaced it with the thing that actually works. I call it the Dreamline. The bones of it I first ran into years ago through Tim Ferriss, and I have rebuilt it into my own version since. It is not a business plan. A business plan tells you what you have to hit. A Dreamline tells you what you are actually building, and then it does something a business plan never does. It sends you the invoice.

Here is the exercise. Three columns. Do it by hand.

Column one is HAVING. This is the easy one, the one everybody defaults to. The land. The car. The system that runs without you standing over it. Write down the things. Be specific and be honest, no flinching and no false modesty.

Column two is BEING. This is the one that actually runs the whole thing, and it is the one most people skip. Who do you have to be. Not what you own. Who you are. For me, this column reads like a short list I would be proud to have read out loud in a room. The father who shows up. The man who does not negotiate with the snooze button. Someone who is genuinely present for the people he loves instead of half there with his phone face down on the table. That column is the actual product. Everything else is packaging.

Column three is DOING. The verbs. The ultra I want to finish. The rebuilt knee getting strong enough to sit under a barbell again. The next chapter with my family that I do not get to fast forward to, I have to build toward. What are you actually doing with the days.

Now the part that changes everything. You total it up. You work out the real monthly operating cost of the life in those three columns. Not a revenue goal. Not a someday number. A lifestyle invoice. What does the next version of your life actually cost to run, per month, in dollars and in hours and in the kind of energy you cannot fake.

The first time you do this, it is almost always smaller than the number you have been killing yourself to hit. That is not a comfort. That is a diagnosis. It means a good chunk of the grind was never about the life. It was about the scoreboard.

Let me make that concrete, because this is where it stops being a nice idea and starts being a mirror. Most people I work with walk in chasing some big round revenue number they have never once done the math on. When we actually build the invoice, the monthly cost of the entire life in their three columns, the number they actually need is a fraction of the one they have been bleeding for. The gap between those two numbers is the exact size of the story they are telling themselves. That gap is not ambition. It is usually fear wearing ambition's jacket.

And notice what the invoice does to the Being column. You cannot buy your way into column two. There is no monthly cost that purchases being present for the people you love, or being the person who gets up on the second alarm. Those are not line items. They are practices. Which means the second you total the invoice, you find out how much of your actual dream money cannot touch, and how much of it you have been avoiding by staying busy with the part money can.

Which brings me to the difference I want you to actually keep this week, the one this whole show is built on.

Guilt is doing something wrong and regretting it. Shame is feeling like a loser and wondering what I am even doing here.

Read that again, because the Dreamline lives right on the seam between those two.

Shame chases a revenue number to prove a point to someone who is probably not even watching. It picks a figure with a lot of zeros because the figure is supposed to finally make you feel like enough, and it never does, because a number cannot do that job. That is a scoreboard built for an audience that went home years ago.

Guilt is different, and it is useful. Guilt is what you feel when you catch the gap between the life you say you want and the way you actually spent Tuesday. It does not ask you to hate yourself. It asks you to close a specific gap. And a Dreamline gives guilt somewhere honest to point, because now you know the number, you know the person in column two, and you can tell in about ten seconds whether today moved you toward that life or just toward a bigger scoreboard.

Growth is a metric on a dashboard. Freedom is the experience of being the person in column two. You can grow every number you own and still not be free, and if you have ever met someone who has everything in column one and none of column two, you already know exactly what that looks like.

I have been that person, by the way. I have had the version of the business where the dashboard was green in every direction and I still felt like a stranger in my own life, because I had optimized the entire thing for an invoice I never actually wrote. I was paying, monthly, in the only currency that matters, for a life I had not once stopped to design. That is the trap the Dreamline is built to spring you from. It forces you to name the life first, price it honestly, and then, and only then, go earn against a number that actually means something.

So build the invoice. Then go be the kind of person who can actually pay it, and I do not mean the money.

THE TAKEAWAY

Shame chases a revenue number to prove a point. Guilt uses a Dreamline to build a life you actually want to live.

RUN THE EXERCISE

Take one category. Six months out. Build the three columns and total the real monthly cost. Screenshot the table if it helps. Then hit reply and send me your BEING column. That is the one I want to read.
